Quality education for all students
I pledge to be a strong and effective advocate for educational success for all students by working for equitable opportunities and quality education for all students regardless of where they live, their economic circumstances, or their learning abilities.
I will advocate for reduced classroom sizes and appropriate funding which is fundamental to the development and maintenance of programs and services that benefit our students such as Advance Placement, International Baccalaureate, English Language Learning and Diverse Learning programs.
I will advocate on behalf of students who may have experienced learning loss during the last two school years because of the Covid19 pandemic. Calgary Catholic and the Province need to address what the impact of the pandemic has been on students and what resources are needed to meet any deficits.
I pledge to initiate appropriate consideration of reinstating full day kindergarten programs. In some schools, particularly schools with high populations of underprivileged children, full day kindergarten programs can have an incredibly, positive impact on students because it helps to close the achievement gap and levels the playing field.
Education is changing
Any new curriculum that is implemented by the Province should have age-appropriate content and outcomes, teach the skills, including digital literacy, future generations need to tackle an ever-changing society and focus on inclusivity, community and diversity. As a trustee I will use my voice to communicate parents’ concerns about curriculum to the Province.
Safety in schools
All children are a gift from God and should be afforded safe and caring learning environments and educational opportunities. Staff should be able to share their gifts and passion for education in the same safe and caring environment. I will work to ensure that students and teachers have access to quality mental health support and resources in order for them to achieve personal growth and success.
I will work to make schools a site for reconciliation and anti-racism education. Our students should be learning and modelling the values of respect, inclusion and dignity.
I will work to keep students and teachers safe in school during the Covid19 pandemic.
Advocating on behalf of parents
I will provide parents a strong voice by advocating on their behalf because parents’ voices matter. Parents should be supported and included in their child’s education.
Open and meaningful communication with all stakeholders, particularly parents
I will continue building positive relationships with parents, school councils, clergy, the Diocese and educational partners such as the Province by striving for open, clear and meaningful communication and by supporting transparency and accountability in the actions and decisions of Calgary Catholic. Calgary Catholic and its trustees must work collaboratively with other Alberta Catholic school divisions and their Catholic school trustees.
With my financial background as a CPA, I will ensure financial stewardship and effective management to ensure that our investment in our students will have a direct positive impact on student learning and maximize student learning outcomes.
I have demonstrated my commitment to Catholic education through my long history of volunteering for Calgary Catholic and at-risk students in Calgary Catholic. I firmly believe that Catholic education recognizes the importance of supporting the whole student in mind, body and spirit and that this fosters positive learning outcomes and teaches the importance of service to others. The unique nature of Catholic education, particularly the sense of family and belonging that exists in Calgary Catholic schools, should be protected and celebrated in a world that values diversity.
